Frequently Asked Questions

To register a business in the Philippines, you need to: (1) register your business name with DTI (for sole proprietorships) or SEC (for corporations, OPCs, and partnerships), (2) secure a Barangay Clearance, (3) get a Mayor’s Permit from your LGU, and (4) complete BIR registration to receive your Certificate of Registration (Form 2303). The full process takes 30 to 45 working days on average. See our step-by-step guide →

Yes! Freelancers and self-employed professionals are legally required to register with the BIR to issue official receipts and file taxes. You’ll receive a Certificate of Registration (BIR Form 2303) and must register your books of accounts and official receipts.

Operating without BIR registration isn’t just risky — it’s costly. Penalties start at ₱1,000 per unfiled return, plus a 25% surcharge and 12% annual interest.

Need a simpler path? Freelancers can get registered more affordably through Taxumo Jumpstart.

DTI registration is for sole proprietorships — one owner, simplest structure, cheapest to set up. SEC registration is for corporations, One Person Corporations (OPCs), and partnerships. Choose SEC if you want limited liability protection, multiple owners, or plan to take on investors.

After registration, you must file and pay taxes regularly (usually quarterly and annually) and keep your books of accounts updated. Taxumo handles the filing and payment of forms like 1701Q, 2551Q, 1601C, and more — all from one dashboard.

Government fees vary by structure and location. DTI business name fees range from ₱200 (Barangay) to ₱2,000 (National). SEC fees start at around ₱2,000 and scale with capital. Barangay Clearance is ₱500–₱1,500, Mayor’s Permit is ₱1,500–₱10,000+ depending on your LGU. The ₱500 BIR Annual Registration Fee was abolished in January 2024 under the Ease of Paying Taxes Act (RA 11976), though a ₱30 Documentary Stamp Tax still applies.

Partially. DTI has an online portal (BNRS), SEC has eSPARC for corporations, and BIR offers NewBizReg. However, most applicants still need to physically appear at their BIR Revenue District Office to register books of accounts and receive Form 2303. Taxumo coordinates all of this on your behalf.

Yes. BIR registration must come before filing. Once you receive your Certificate of Registration (Form 2303), you can legally issue receipts or invoices and file your tax returns.

Yes. Taxumo registers businesses across all regions in the Philippines. We work with BIR Revenue District Offices and LGUs nationwide — whether you’re in Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, or a small municipality.

Most Taxumo business registrations are completed in 15 to 20 business days, depending on your LGU and BIR RDO turnaround. That’s roughly half the time of DIY registration.
